How to Detangle a Long Cosplay Wig
Share
Short answer: detangle a long cosplay wig while it’s dry, on a wig stand, using a wide-tooth comb. Work in small sections and always start at the ends, moving up a few centimetres at a time. Mist stubborn knots with a detangling spray (or water with a little fabric softener) and pull them apart with your fingers before combing.
Why long wigs tangle
Synthetic fibre builds up static and rubs against clothes, especially at the back of the neck. Long styles like floor-length hair and twin tails tangle faster because there is more fibre moving around.
What you need
- A wig stand, or a tall bottle to hang it on
- A wide-tooth comb
- Detangling spray, or a spray bottle with water and a little fabric softener
- Hair clips
Step by step
- Mount the wig on a stand and clip the top layers out of the way.
- Take a small section from the bottom layer, about 2–3 cm wide.
- Hold the section above the knot so you don’t pull on the cap.
- Comb the last 5 cm of the ends until smooth.
- Move up 5 cm at a time and repeat until the comb runs from root to tip.
- Mist and finger-pick any tight knots before combing them.
- Repeat with the next section, working up to the crown.
Rescuing a badly matted nape
The hair at the back of the neck mats the most. Spray it generously with conditioner and water, wait 10 minutes, then separate the mat into smaller clumps with your fingers before combing. If the very ends are fused or frizzed, trim them off. A few millimetres won’t be noticed.
Preventing tangles at events
- Braid or loosely tie the lower lengths when you’re travelling.
- Carry a small comb and a travel spray bottle.
- Avoid high collars and rough fabrics that rub the back of the wig.
- Store long wigs hanging, or folded loosely in a hair net. See wig care tips.
Frequently asked questions
Should I detangle a wig wet or dry?
Dry. Synthetic fibre stretches and snaps more easily when wet, and wet knots tighten. Only use a light mist of detangling spray on stubborn knots.
Can I use a normal hairbrush on a synthetic wig?
Not on long wigs. A wide-tooth comb or a wig brush with widely spaced pins causes less frizz and breakage.
How do I stop my wig from getting staticky?
Lightly mist it with water mixed with a little fabric softener, or use an anti-static wig spray. Washing with conditioner also reduces static.
Can a matted synthetic wig be saved?
Usually yes. Soften the mat with conditioner and water, separate it with your fingers, then comb from the ends up. Only badly heat-damaged or fused ends need to be trimmed.
